Hinder's, Mark King Shares Some Rock & Roll With Fallen Blue
Last Updated on 20.07.11 Written by X Guarnieri
Last night, Mark King, rhythm guitarist for the rock & roller heavyweights, Hinder, took some time to answer some questions, which included where the band got their name, their upcoming shows on the open sea with Shiprocked, and a recent police tragedy that the band was affected by. The guys in Hinder are a great group of people, who party and rock hard, but also lend their time and devotion to various causes, to include numerous animal charities.
Mark said that the band is anxiously aiting the arrival of November when they set sail on Shiprocked. The third annual cruise is once again leading the pack when it comes to music orientated cruises, and Hinder will only strengthen this years edition. According to Mark, many of the band members have never been on a cruise, so it will be a classic time shared by all. Mark and the boys also recently took part in this years Rock on the Range, and to say that they had an amazing time would be selling it short. Mark said that one of the "coolest" things that happened was when "Fieldy from Korn approached us after our set with his daughter in tow. Fieldly proceeded to tell the us that his daughter is a huge fan of the band and would love to have a picture with us." Mark was honored to meet his daughter, and thought it was pretty cool since the band Korn was one of their biggest inspirations when they were coming up in the music world.
When asked about how the band prepares for each of their performances, Mark said that the band will "turn up the tunes on the bus, get in the mood, do some shots, drink some beers and get ready to rock the crowd." He also said that for him, it is much easier to play in front of a larger crowd as oppossed to having one person watch, as he would be more "nervous" he said with a laugh. If you were one of the lucky fans to attend Rock on the Range, you would have witnessed Hinder put on an incredible show, with 100% audience sing-along participation. When I brought up their album Take It To The Limit, and how the album is more glam driven, Mark said that one of his biggest glam band influences is Motley Crue. He said that when they played with the band a couple of years ago, it was a dream come to true to play with their idols.
One of their biggest hits is the song 'Get Stoned', and a fan of true rock & roll would realize that the guitar solo from that song is taken from Steppenwolf's, 'Born to Be Wild.' I asked Mark where the inspiration to add some of that classic rock song to 'Get Stoned' came from and what led them to actully cover the song as well: "We were approached by NASCAR, as they were looking for a new, young band to cover the song for their promotion. At first we were hesitant to even play the song, but once we started to jam it actually sounded pretty good, so that led to us playing it at some of our shows as well. We have never met the guys in Steppenwolf, but nonetheless we were honored to cover such an iconic song."
One thing I was always curious about was how the band got their name. Mark explained that the band, originally composed of X, Cody Hanson, and Joe Garvey, were so frustrated that they weren't getting gigs and the recogition, that they looked up "frustrated" in the thesaurus and one of the first words they s was "Hinder", so that is how the name stuck.
Mark brought to my attention that the band took part in a charity event for a local Oklahoma City police officer, Chad Peery, who was seriously injured while trying to break up a fight while off-duty. The band donated numerous autographed guitars and merchandise for the cause. Mark said that Officer Peery was a great guy, and that the band was grateful to help. He also reiterated that whenever they can, the guys will do whatever it takes to help out.
Fallen Blue is grateful for all the help that Hinder has given us. Managed by "Chief" Zaruk of Chief Music Management, it is no wonder the band has been so grateful to step out to the plate and help the families of police officers killed off-duty. Hinders latest album, All American Nightmare is currently in stores now. Their new single 'What ya Gonna Do' is currently burning up the charts.
